To see if TCP/IP is installed on your
machine
Step 1: Click Windows Start and
then click Run.
Step 2: In the Run dialog box,
depending on your operating system, do the following
Windows
95, 98, and Me users:
Type command and click OK.
Windows
NT, 2000, and XP users:
Type cmd and click OK.
The command line window opens which is a black
window with light gray text.
Step 3: In the command line window, type ping
127.0.0.1 and press Enter.
This is your local host address. The address assures
that TCP/IP is installed and functions properly.
Your
ping test was successful and TCP/IP is properly
installed if you receive the response Reply
from 127.0.0.1
bytes=32 time<xms TTL=128. Note that
numbers will appear in place of each x.
Your
ping test was unsuccessful and
TCP/IP is not installed if you receive the response
Request timed
out. If your request was unsuccessful,
TCP/IP is not properly installed on your computer.
Consult the help section of your computer
operating system and search for installing TCP/IP.
To see if you can connect to the Internet
Step 1: Click Windows Start and
then click Run.
Step 2: In the Run dialog box,
depending on your operating system, do the following
Windows
95, 98, and Me users:
Type command and click OK.
Windows
NT, 2000, and XP users:
Type cmd and click OK.
The command line window opens which is a black
window with light gray text.
Step 3: In the command line window, type
ping 205.171.3.65 and press Enter.
This is your DNS server address. This will allow
you to resolve valid Internet host names to IP
addresses and to verify that you can access the
Internet.
Your
ping test was successful and
you can get to our DNS server if you receive the
response Reply from
205.171.3.65 bytes=32 time<#ms TTL=128.
Your
ping test was unsuccessful and
you aren’t able to get to our DNS server
if you receive the response
Request timed out
Step 4: Type ping yahoo.com.
This will verify that you can access the Internet.
Your ping test was successful If you receive the
response Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xx bytes=32
time time<xms TTL=128 then the ping
test was successful. Note that numbers will appear
in place of each x.
Your ping test was unsuccessful
and you aren’t able to get to our DNS server
if you receive the response Request timed
out. This means that you are not currently
able to access the Internet.
